Gehry Technologies Awarded Building Information Model (BIM) Award by AIA
LOS ANGELES, CA, Apr 10, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Gehry Technologies (GT), a global leader in applying technology to building industry challenges, today announces that Fondation Louis Vuitton has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious BIM Excellence award, given by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community). The 2012 Technology in Architectural Practice BIM Awards jury selected Fondation Louis Vuitton for its notable contributions to the profession of architecture.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton project -- whose BIM delivery process was orchestrated and managed by Gehry Technologies -- "illustrated an extraordinary integration of BIM into all project phases" was the commentary of this year's BIM Awards Jury, according to Stephen Hagan, fellow of the AIA, who helps lead the AIA TAP BIM Awards, now in its eighth year. The jury went on to say that, "The project shows how BIM can enable design excellence throughout the project and beyond into facility operations" and that GT and its project partners "...pushed the limits of current technology to its fullest... The breadth of the collaboration and the integration with fabrication were both impressive; people all over the world worked efficiently and effectively on this project using BIM."
Located in Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is a new art museum designed by Gehry Partners. The building is a show piece -- not only of art, but of design and technology. Gehry Technologies provided strategic consulting for the duration of the project. BIM formed the foundation, cloud model servers enabled concurrent design, advanced parametrics brought the project to the next level and an automated CNC process completed the fabrication chain.
More specifically, key design and technology accomplishments included:
15+ teams collaborated on the design worldwide
Over 400 model users and collaborators were involved
Nearly 100 Gigs of BIM model data were used
Over 100,000 version reiterations of the BIM
19,000 unique CNC molded glass reinforced concrete panels
3,500 unique CNC molded curved glass panels

The Fondation Louis Vuitton design was driven by two important ambitions: an approach to the site, and a design ambition shared by the client and architect. The building serves as a gateway to the Jardin d' Acclimatation, an exceptional site within the Bois de Boulogne. The use of glass as the primary exterior material plays a principal role in the architecture of the Fondation Louis Vuitton structures built in harmony with nature while using the most innovative materials and systems of the time and is a reference and an ode to historical garden structures of 19th Century.
