McCarthy breaks ground for new medical office building in Illinois

The medical office building is connected to the new replacement hospital that is being built. The building spans 141,000 square feet and features a surgery center and outpatient diagnostic services. McCarthy is also constructing the replacement hospital and has recently topped out the facility.

The $140 million hospital project is designed by BSA LifeStructures. It doubles the size of the existing facility and is about 30% complete. The 134-bed hospital spans 359,000 square feet and features eight observation beds with all rooms being private.

Both buildings are made of concrete and structural steel with a brick and stone veneer. The design and construction processes of both buildings include a number of new elements such as rooms designed to have a short distance between bed and bathroom to minimise risk of patient falls, energy performance rated high-efficiency heating and cooling system, decentralized nursing stations to reduce distance between patients and caregivers and a “family zone” in each private room that allows for families to stay overnight.

Building Information Modeling (BIM), Bluebeam software and prefabrication is being used to improve construction efficiency and coordination on the project. Efficiency of the building is being improved by using prefabrication on the project by assembling wall sections of patient bathrooms and patient room head walls, inclusive of electrical and plumbing systems in a local warehouse and delivering them to the site for installation.
