Now-a-days shop drawings are considered to be the part and parcel of every construction project. The contractor, supplier, manufacturer, real estate developer, subcontractor, or fabricator create shop drawing to be utilized for pre-fabricated components like elevators, structural steel, trusses, pre-cast, windows, appliances, cabinets, air handling units, millwork etc . Shop drawings generate enormously vital information about measures and specifications of pre-fabricated components. MEP engineers also require the installation and coordination shop drawings that range from sheet metal ductwork, piping, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical.
The shop drawing refers to the drawn version of information provided by the Manufacturer or Contractor. These informations are exposed in the construction documents. The shop drawing is required to provide details of the fabrication and/or installation of the items to the manufacturer’s production crew or contractor's installation crews.
The shop drawing is the only place in the project document where all the connection details are shown with specifications to resolve connection issues. As for instance, a properly designed BIM wall system facilitates a much larger percentage of material to be pre-cut to accurate dimensions off-site, which lead to considerable savings in material and labor.
Now with BIM or Building Information System, the contractor can produce 3D shop drawings in which a 3D model can be directly applied for assembly and installation to forecast how the building structure will perform at the early stage of design. A 3D shop drawing contains huge database of information which can be applied for selecting the best construction technique to achieve the best possible output. To get rid of future design inconsistencies and radical changes as the general contractor arranges the BIM model while integrating shop drawings from the different trades, the architects and engineers evaluate shop drawings to ensure that the contractors, manufactures and suppliers have understood the design objective in the same sense.
